Walking down Pine Street last week, I passed the new glassy Oura headquarters that is perched on a hill looking down over San Francisco.
It sits across from 555 California, the menacing Bank of America tower at the edge of the financial district and away from the other AI startups.
I was one of Oura's early adopters. I sized my first ring wrong and it slipped off while swimming in the ocean. I haplessly searched the sea bottom and, when I couldn't find it, I bought another. Now I buy every upgraded ring the week it ships.
So why is it The Lord of the Rings? It rarely breaks and needs no maintenance beyond a charger. It isn’t bulky and keeps adding features — temperature, blood oxygen, illness alerts — faster than I can figure out what to do with them.
It's not perfect, but it helps me prioritize my health every day.
The Oura Ring is designed to be one of the most accurate wearables. Worn day and night, it measures pulse, body temperature, and movement, and can even detect signs you're getting sick. It does it all from your finger, turning those readings into estimates on your phone about how long and how well you slept, how strong your heart is, and whether your body is under strain.
What I’ve really found is that they expose me to the things I’d become great at not noticing.
For most of my life, I was a five-hour-a-night sleeper. I stayed up late, got up early, felt energized, and assumed I was fine. But over time I wasn't fine, and the science shows it. Using my Oura, I learned that I probably spent fifty years lying to myself about sleep.
In a University of Pennsylvania study, researchers limited people’s sleep window to six hours a night for two weeks. On cognitive tests, they performed as poorly as people who kept awake for 48 straight hours. Yet when asked, they reported feeling only "slightly sleepy."
Considering only less than 1% of the population has the rare genetic mutation that allows them to thrive on a short amount of sleep, I’m probably not one of them— you probably aren’t either.

Through sleep, the Oura Ring pointed out my blind spot. But it also created a new one.
Once I started measuring my physiology, sleep suddenly became more important. Maybe too much.
In 2017, researchers at Rush University coined the term orthosomnia to describe patients convinced they slept poorly solely because their tracker said so, even when they woke up feeling fine. In a recent survey of 1,280 adults, nearly a third tracked their sleep, and 30%of those who do reported feeling anxiety over the data.
I’ve caught myself doing it. I wake up refreshed, but after reading a mediocre “readiness” score, which I assume indicates how ‘ready’ my body is to brave the day, I’ve let my digital accessory convince me I’m exhausted.
That is the paradox of modern health tech. Nearly every wearable validates the measurement, but none of it proves that tracking it makes you healthier.
So what is the real value?
The utility lies in the raw, unvarnished baseline biometrics: resting heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and continuous skin temperature. Most importantly, it’s valuable because it’s an alarm clock for something off-kilter in my body.
The ring hasn’t just given me a window into my sleep. It also shows how a hard bike ride on Tuesday lingers in Wednesday’s resting heart rate; how wine and a late dinner affect my sleep at 3 a.m.; how a week of travel can take 10 days to unwind.
In UCSF’s TemPredict study, the ring’s temperature sensors were able to detect the onset of fevers and illness an average of nearly three days before participants reported feeling sick.
The ring doesn't manage my health; that's my job. But it helps me pay more attention and connects the dots.
And for that, I’ll probably buy the Oura Ring 6.
