Hormones of youth

Add youthful skin to the growing list of benefits that are linked to hormones.

💆 A new class of hormones might be able to prevent wrinkles and gray hair, according to research published in Endocrine Reviews.

Anti-skin aging hormones:

  • Insulin-like growth factor 1

  • Growth hormones

  • Estrogens

  • Retinoids

  • Melatonin (this stand-out candidate is small, inexpensive, tolerable, and capable of regulating mitochondrial metabolism) 😴

Other endocrine system hormones and molecules were also shown to have potential aging benefits—this includes ‘love’ hormone oxytocin. ♥️

How do hormones contribute to skin aging?

Hormones affect skin aging pathways that lead to wrinkles and gray hair, says lead author Markus Böhm, MD, of the University of Münster in Münster, Germany.

  • Hormones can disrupt connective tissues in the skin, reduce hair pigment, and alter stem cell survival

Big picture

Different factors affect skin aging:

  • 🧬 Intrinsic factors: Genetics, epigenetics (how genes are expressed), biological aging (menopause)

  • ☀️ External factors: Sun exposure, pollution, nutrition

There is a small number of hormones (i.e., retinoids) which are clinically used to treat skin aging, but this research opens the door for new modalities to prevent and treat skin aging.

Strategic stress and sitting to solve world peace

Wright explains healthy aging principles. Image credit: The Diary Of A CEO podcast on Youtube

Key takeaways from a recent podcast featuring an exercise expert.

In a recent interview for The Diary Of A CEO podcast, Dr. Vonda Wright had an in-depth discussion about bone health, protein, muscle, longevity, and more.

These are four things we took away from the episode.

1. The body rises to the “strategic stress” placed on it

The body adapts to exercise. No matter your age, starting weight training and being consistent can be game changers for your health.

2. You and your family are the early warning signs of osteoporosis

If you say yes to any of these questions, you may have a higher risk of age-related bone loss and morbidity. There are things you can do to reduce the risk.

  • Has your mother/father gotten shorter with age?

  • Has anyone in your family had a hip fracture?

  • Have you had a hip fracture?

  • Do you have asthma or autoimmune disorder?

3. Sitting contributes to the nationwide back pain problem

The core and back muscles grow weak when we chronically sit, and this is contributing to an endemic of lower back pain.

This quote really seems to sum it up…

“The only time we really need to sit is when we are solving world peace”

Combat the effects of sitting:

  • She’ll say it once and say it again—strength training is key.

  • Get more movement during the day. Mid-meeting wall squats anyone?

4. Diet for performance

🥒 When Wright works with professional athletes, they are eating lots of vegetables, high-quality protein, and take amino acid supplements to ‘fill in the gaps’ for protein requirements.

  • Wright aims to eat the same amount protein in grams as her body weight.

  • She eats minimal complex carbohydrates and avoids fruit (except for blueberries).

🤸 We’re excited to hear Dr. Wright speak at The Livelong Experience on March 29 at Palm Beach. Get your ticket today. Almost sold out!🤸

Good vibrations

A team of Swiss researchers made a key discovery about vibration therapy—a form of therapy that sends mechanical vibrations to certain parts of the body to stimulate bone growth, according to a recent press release.

  • 😬 Vibration therapy ‘stresses’ your bones out (in a good way): The targeted force can lead to “larger, denser and more stable” bones, according to the article.

  • 🦴 The stress activates certain genes in the bones, which prompts bone mineralization and the formation of healthy collagen networks that lead to faster healing.

Vibing into older age

While commonly used to treat bone fractures, researchers are excited about its potential to prevent bone aging reduce the risk of osteoporosis (bone loss), a disease that affects millions of Americans.

LONG-LEVITY

The magic of marigold for health

The marigold is a vibrant yellow flower that may be as beautiful as it is healthy. A new paper in Scientific Reports sheds light on the many ways in which it can benefit your health. 🌼

Mineral-rich marvel: It’s mineral content triumphs well-known superfoods:

  • More potassium than quinoa

  • More iron than spinach!

Antioxidant powerhouse: It is rich in anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory anthocyanins, flavenoids, and carotenoids.

Vitamin C: The flower may have as much vitamin C as tomatoes and apples.

The benefits are many, and marigold may be worthy of the title ‘functional food’ or ‘superfood,’ according to an article discussing the study.
