Just five minutes: Add somatic exercises to your morning routine for a better 2025

Five-minute somatic exercises help activate your nervous system and morning routine.

The act of waking up isn't enough to fully prepare your body for the day, but five minutes of somatic exercises is.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, short somatic exercises (movements to strengthen bodily awareness) wake up the nervous system in a way that provides a sense of calm or offers a healthy boost of energy.

🧘🏻‍♀️ This quick habit stimulates the mind-body connection and promotes longevity.

Here’s how:

  • Promotes healthy vagal tone. The vagus nerve (a nerve that runs from the brain and throughout the body) affects digestion, heart rate, and the immune system. When stimulated, it helps the body respond to stressors.

  • Develop bodily awareness. A sore neck, tailbone, or other discomforts reveal where your body holds tension, and somatic practices can help you to recognize and regulate stress from the inside out.

What are somatic exercises?

Military mindset: Sticking to your New Year’s Resolution in 2025

These mental tips can help strengthen both your mind and body.

Ten-hut! you don’t have to go to boot camp to be more disciplined.

Use military-backed principles to achieve your goals and increase the odds of sticking to your New Year’s resolutions.

Becoming more disciplined means learning how to hold yourself accountable–whether that is making specific and achievable goals, tracking progress, and celebrating small victories.

It’s all in your head: Committing to a fresh start in the new year is only as effective as your mindset, says the U.S. Department of Defense

If your fresh start is becoming more physically active, the military (whose members must exemplify peak physical fitness) has some tips for that too.

Train like a soldier with these beginner-friendly exercises:

  • Walk–run progression. This method, recommended by the army, is a great way to build your endurance.

  • Alternate walking and running. Gradually decrease the walk time while increasing the run times over several weeks. Calisthenics for strength and mobility. This form of training can be done at home using your own body weight and often consists of lunges, squats, and pushups.

Warm-up & cool-down. The army stresses the importance of proper buildup and recovery and not pushing yourself beyond your limits.

Tiny sensors help heal broken bones sooner

🔬Tiny implantable sensors can heal broken bones in a matter of weeks.

Resistance training significantly boosts recovery after a bone injury, according to a recent study. 🦴

Using mini implantable sensors, researchers wanted to see how recovery speed is impacted by resistance training in rats. They found that the addition of resistance/strength training early in the recovery process will enhance healing.

Specifically, resistance allowed the rats to regenerate femurs at a faster rate.

This breakthrough offers a new healing strategy that could revolutionize how medical professionals approach bone injury recovery.
