Five home remedies for longevity
It’s deliciously intriguing to hear old wives’ tales about concocting remedies from common (and not-so-common) herbs, ingredients, rituals, and more.
There seems to be a remedy for every ailment.
Hearing these stories feels like being told a secret and I am lucky enough to get in on it.
Many of these tales and embellished stories are just that–tales and embellishments.
But others are infused with timeless truths and wisdom that have been passed down from generation to generation. This is the real magic.
Some of these remedies and practices can lead to a longer life, and they may be found in your kitchen cabinet, among weeds that dot the side of the road, encapsulated in a bottle at your local pharmacy, or within yourself.
You just have to know what you are looking for, and where to look.
We’ve listed five home remedies that may be anti-aging and promote a longer life. These remedies are simple, accessible, and supported by scientific literature.

1. 🥛 Golden (turmeric) milk
We’ve talked about golden milk before, and for good reason.
Curcumin is a very healthy compound that can be found in turmeric, which is the main ingredient in golden milk.
The drink is derived from haldi doodh, a traditional Indian cold remedy that has been around for hundreds of years. It is beloved today for its soft yellow hue, earthy taste, and many health benefits.
Golden milk contains many antioxidants, reduces inflammation, may improve brain function, and could lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, according to smaller studies, according to Healthline.
Curcumin can influence every aging process in one way or another, according to researchers. This makes it a potent anti-aging remedy that you can enjoy everyday from the comfort of home.
Enjoy this authentic golden milk recipe.
2. 🫁 Coherent breathing
Coherent breathing is a slow and controlled breathing pattern of five to six breaths per minute. When it comes to coherent breathing, length is more important than time.
In a 2001 study from Italy, researchers found that ancient Buddhist mantras and Christian Latin Prayers (also called the Rosary) both followed a breathing pattern of approximately 5.5 breaths.
Native American, Hindu, and Taoist prayers also lasted for a similar length of time, which shows that many civilizations had different means but somehow reached an incredibly similar end.
Controlled, slow breathing bolsters health by increasing heart rate variability (HRV).
High variability indicates better cardiorespiratory fitness and a more adaptable body.
High HRV is shown to boost mood, reduce stress, and may indicate fewer health problems in the future.
Practicing just 10 minutes every day can have measurable health benefits.
Look on YouTube for guided sessions. This five-minute session is a good place to start.
3. 🌿 Elderberries
Elderberries are one of the most powerful cold and flu remedies to date, and they are one of the most tasty too (Taste is important. You are more likely to follow through with treatment if you can tolerate the flavor).
For hundreds of years, elderberry extracts were used to treat infections.
Immune health benefits aside, elderberries have unproven health benefits that include lowering cholesterol, reducing inflammation, and lowering risk of diabetes and cancer.
Elderberries are abundant with immune-boosting vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants. They are accessible as a supplement, gummy, syrup, tea, lozenge, capsule and liquid herbal supplement at most pharmacies and or online grocers.
🙌 Fun facts!
People in the olden days would call elderberries a medicine chest of country people.
They were considered a fruit for longevity in the Middle Ages.
4. 🍵 Green tea
You may not enjoy the taste of tea (as beloved AppleTV character Ted Lasso puts it, "I always thought tea was going to taste like hot brown water”) however, it is one of the best longevity drinks.
🌍 People in the Blue Zones, geographical regions with the most centenarians, regularly drink tea as part of the daily lifestyle.
Green tea is particularly healthy, as it fights disease, reduces the risk of heart disease, and it even slows cancer growth, with one study showing that green tea even slows lung and breast cancer cell growth, according to an article in Blue Zones.
Green tea also reduces the risk of developing any type of cancer, based on results from a trial that studied the effects of green tea on cancer growth in 100,000 people.
5. 🍯 Honey
In the Blue Zone of Ikaria, honey is a secret ingredient for longevity, according to Diane Kochilas, a leading figure in Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, in an article for CNBC.
Ikarians in the early 20th century combined honey, sage, ginger, and garlic for a natural form of “penicillin,” according to Kochilas.
Honey was also used to treat coughs and sore throat, and it’s still commonly used among natural healers.
Honey never expires, which is also why it is prized for longevity in its own rite.
It contains many antioxidants—namely flavonoids and polyphenols (grapes are rich in these)—and it is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antimetastatic, according to a review of clinical research.
It can also treat wounds, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease, as well as gastrointestinal disease and nervous system-related conditions, according to the review.
While we don’t recommend substituting honey for clinical treatments, including pure and raw honey into your diet could have some serious longevity benefits.
